Degree Programs

Both our curriculum and community are grounded in three crucial elements of Christian commitment: spirituality, worship, and formation; radical orthodoxy and the quest for justice; and ecumenical life and learning. We offer the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program in partnership with Trinity Lutheran Seminary. We also offer a Certificate in Anglican Studies for people seeking ordination in the Episcopal Church who have graduate theological education from a seminary in another tradition.

The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) Degree

The M.Div. is a three-year program for persons preparing for the ordained priesthood of the Episcopal Church. This program combines deep academic study and reflection with spiritual and pastoral formation and the practice of ministry in the local church. You'll take courses in the Scriptures, Church History, Contemporary Society, Theology and Ethics, Liturgics and Preaching, and Ascetical and Pastoral Theology. The small size of Bexley Hall and the intentional community which we share helps you and your classmates to make the connections between the various disciplines. The integration of your coursework, your spiritual life and your pastoral experiences are the hallmark of a seminary education. This equips you for effective ministry in today's Church.

The Certificate in Anglican Studies

Bexley Hall offers a program of study leading to a Certificate of Anglican Studies. It is available in Columbus to Anglican students who have graduated from seminaries of other traditions. You will take courses with students in our degree programs, with a focus on what makes our Anglican identity distinctive. Courses include English and American Church History, Liturgics, Ascetical Theology and Contemporary Anglican Parishes.

Academic Track for the Master of Divinity Degree Program

In 2003-04, the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada approved Bexley Hall's M.Div. program in Columbus, and the Ohio Board of Regents granted Bexley Hall the right to grant its own Master of Divinity degree. Applications to this M.Div. program are handled by the Trinity Lutheran Seminary Admissions Office.

Bexley Hall and Trinity Lutheran Seminary use a traditional semester system, with a January (J-term) month, where intensive courses are offered, frequently including travel abroad. Biblical languages are offered as electives, although Greek is always highly recommended (see below). Latin is offered at the Pontifical College Josephinum. Anglican Formation is required every semester, and Field Education during the Middler Year (though many students do more). Clinical Pastoral Education is not a seminary requirement, but most dioceses require it of their postulants.

1 Systematic Theology is an introductory survey; BH students will take a distributive Advanced Theology course (such as Topics in Anglican Theology or Christ and the Atonement) in addition.
2 In this schema all the basic courses needed for ordination examinations (GOE/diocesan) will have been completed by the end of the fall semester of the senior year.
